Grūps App v0.8.8 is the biggest release yet. Chat gets reply threads, the calendar is completely rebuilt, location sharing gains trip history and place categories, and there's a new group activity log for admins. Here's everything that's new.

Chat reply threads

Long-press any message to open a full reply thread — replies are tucked away from the main conversation, exactly like Slack. Tapping a reply jumps you to the original message. Each message shows a reply count pill so you can see active discussions at a glance. Group chat channels now get auto-generated avatars using your group's colours.

Completely rebuilt calendar

The event creation flow has been replaced with a single clean page — no more 6-step wizard. Beyond that:

  • Search for events by name
  • Duplicate an existing event in one tap
  • Save events as reusable templates
  • Full timezone support for cross-timezone groups
  • Drag and drop to reschedule directly on week or month view
  • Export any event to your device's calendar app
  • When editing a repeating event, choose to change just this occurrence or all future ones
  • Today is highlighted with a red line in agenda view, and the view scrolls to today automatically

Location: trip history and place categories

Trip history — tap the Trip button on the map to see a colour-coded dashed trail showing where each sharing member has been. Free plan shows the last 24 hours; Basic shows 3 days; Pro and above shows 7 days. Tap any point on a trail to see the exact time that person was there.

Place categories — places now have categories: Home, School, Work, Gym, and Other, each with a matching emoji on the map and in your places list. Picking a category auto-fills the name and colour. Geofence alerts now include the category emoji and natural-sounding text like "Emma arrived at Home • 3:47 PM". The alert settings panel shows a live preview of exactly what the push notification will look like.

Rebuilt post and page editor

The editor has a cleaner two-row toolbar covering formatting, colours, alignment, lists, links, images, and video embeds. You can now embed a photo album gallery directly inside a post or page. Text highlights stay readable in both light and dark mode.

Email and notification improvements

  • Turn off email notifications globally from Account → Notification Preferences, or per group from My Group Settings
  • Turn off push notifications per group — members who've opted out won't receive them
  • Every email now includes a one-click unsubscribe link
  • If your email address has bounced, a clear banner lets you know so you can update it
  • The in-app notification inbox is now called Activity and lives at its own page
  • Notification Preferences is a single page covering push, email, and SMS

Group activity log (Pro+)

Group admins can now view a complete log of everything that's happened in the group — content created, members joined, settings changed, and more. Filter by category, export as CSV, and control which categories are visible to regular members.

Admin and security improvements

  • The admin user list supports searching, filtering by role and status, and server-side pagination — much faster for large groups
  • A new Roles & Permissions page lets platform admins promote or demote roles
  • A new Audit Log page shows a paginated history of admin actions, filterable by type
  • Destructive admin actions require re-entering your password as a safeguard (stays active for 10 minutes)
  • The group details modal now shows admin names and email addresses, plus an Email Group Admins button

Other fixes

  • Recognition: Send button always visible on last step; non-Latin characters render correctly in the 3D celebration view
  • Polls: admins and creators can always view results for private polls
  • Bookings: double-booking prevented at the database level; intake question answers preserved on updates
  • Privacy: emergency contacts, COPPA compliance for under-13s, cookie consent banner, encrypted phone number storage
  • Performance: scrolling through posts, notifications, albums, and Q&A threads all load more quickly
