Grūps App v0.9.12 brings a wide range of improvements — faster load times throughout the app, a much more reliable location and geofencing experience, and a set of chat upgrades that make navigating conversations feel more natural. Here's everything that's changed.
Speed & Performance
The app as a whole feels snappier in this release. Pages you've already visited now load instantly, showing your previous content right away rather than flashing a loading skeleton every time you return. Chat messages appear faster when you open a conversation, mentions and notifications load quietly in the background, and switching between chats no longer shows a blank screen in between. The app also launches noticeably faster overall.
Chat
Navigating between channels is now as easy as swiping left or right inside a chat — no need to go back to the drawer. A few other quality-of-life additions:
- An "All Chats" entry now appears in the mobile chat drawer when a group has more than one channel
- Long-pressing a message shows an action sheet with Edit, Bookmark, and Copy Link options
- @mentions now appear in amber, while @channel and @here appear in green, so they stand out at a glance
- @here now sends push notifications only to members who are currently online
Location & Geofences
Location tracking has seen the most work this release. Trips are now recorded automatically in the background even if you never open the map, and a bug that caused gaps of 20 or more minutes in tracking — triggered by the phone's motion sensor incorrectly deciding you'd stopped mid-drive — has been fixed. Geofence entry and exit notifications now arrive within seconds rather than 4–5 minutes when your phone is in the background.
Several other issues have also been resolved:
- Toggling geofence alert subscriptions on or off now saves correctly (it was silently failing before)
- The correct subscriber count now shows on each geofence card
- When multiple members share the same display name, their email is shown alongside to tell them apart
- On iOS, granting "Always Allow" location permission no longer causes the prompt to reappear, and the app now detects permission changes made in iOS Settings without needing a restart
- Fixed an issue where trips were not being created because the wrong permission level was being requested on iOS
Location Debug Tools
For members who share their location, the debug drawer has been significantly improved. It now has two tabs — App Logs and SDK Logs — giving you a clear view of both app-level events and raw GPS engine output. Logs can be filtered by severity and event type, repeated identical entries collapse into a single row with a count, and you can share logs directly from the drawer using the native share sheet on iOS and Android.
Maps & Search
Tapping a search result now actually takes you there. Events, posts, polls, chat messages — all of them previously went nowhere, and that's now fixed. The map has also been updated to show trips for all group members who share location, not just those who are currently live-sharing.
Photos & Media
The photo lightbox now supports swipe gestures — swipe left or right to move through images in chat galleries and photo albums, and swipe up or down to close.
Web Pages
Page editors can now hide the title overlay on banner images using a new toggle. Banner images also display at full width and correct height, flush with the navigation bar. A few editor reliability fixes are included too: reordering pages with the up/down buttons now works correctly, and the "Unsaved changes" indicator behaves as expected — appearing only after a real change has been made and clearing properly after saving. Public-facing pages no longer show the reading time estimate or bookmark button.
Groups, Members & General Fixes
Premium users can now correctly set their group visibility to Public, fixing a data format mismatch that removed the option entirely. Elsewhere, a crash on the group home page has been fixed, drag-and-drop reordering no longer shows a phantom floating copy of the item, the desktop sidebar now defaults to pinned open, and duplicate Stripe receipt emails after a successful payment are no longer sent. The Android app icon has also been corrected — it was showing a green template placeholder instead of the real Grūps App icon.
