Account Settings

Security, appearance, language, location, and personal data — all your account-level preferences in one place.

Security

Open Settings → Security to manage your password, two-factor authentication, passkeys, phone verification, biometric login, active sessions, and recent account activity.

Password

Three options are available for changing your password:

New passwords must meet one of two requirements (checked in real time as you type):

Either option satisfies the password requirement — use whichever style suits you.

Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

Two-factor authentication adds a second verification step when you log in — in addition to your password, you'll need to enter a code sent to your phone. This makes your account significantly harder to compromise.

Enabling 2FA

  1. Go to Settings → Security.
  2. Tap Enable 2FA.
  3. Verify your phone number (or use your already-verified number).
  4. 2FA is now active. You'll receive a code by SMS each time you log in.

Trusted devices

When you complete a 2FA challenge, a "Remember this device for 30 days" checkbox appears. Check it to mark the device as trusted — you won't be asked for a verification code on that device for 30 days. Trusted device status is tied to your browser; clearing browser data or using a different browser will require 2FA again.

Disabling 2FA

Tap Disable 2FA and confirm. A warning explains that disabling 2FA reduces your account security. Your phone number remains verified; only the extra login step is removed.

Recommended for group admins If you manage a group, enabling 2FA protects your admin access from unauthorized use.

Backup Codes

When 2FA is enabled, backup codes let you access your account if you lose access to your phone. Each code is single-use — once used, it cannot be used again.

Tap Generate Backup Codes to create a set of codes. A warning appears: generating new codes invalidates any previously generated codes.

Once generated:

Store your backup codes somewhere safe Treat backup codes like a password. Store them in a password manager, print them, or keep them somewhere you can access them without your phone. If you lose your phone and don't have backup codes, you may be locked out of your account.

Passkeys

Passkeys let you sign in to Grūps App without a password — using Face ID, Touch ID, Windows Hello, or a hardware security key instead. They are more secure than passwords because they cannot be phished or reused across sites.

Passkeys are available on the web app in browsers that support the WebAuthn standard (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Edge on modern devices).

Signing in with a passkey

Once you have a passkey registered, a Sign in with passkey button appears on the Grūps App login screen. Tap it and authenticate with your fingerprint, face, or device PIN — no password needed. If passkey sign-in fails or no passkey is found for your account, you'll see an error and can sign in with your email and password instead.

First-login setup prompt

After your first login following email verification, Grūps App shows a one-time "Sign in faster with a passkey" prompt. You can set up a passkey right then, or dismiss it and add one later from Settings → Security.

Adding a passkey

  1. Go to Settings → Security.
  2. In the Passkeys section, tap Add Passkey.
  3. Your browser prompts you to authenticate with your device (Face ID, fingerprint, PIN, or security key).
  4. Once registered, the passkey appears in your list with its name and creation date.

You can register multiple passkeys — for example, one for your laptop and one for your phone.

Removing a passkey

Each passkey in the list has a remove button. Tap it to delete that passkey. Removing a passkey means you can no longer use it to sign in — your password and any remaining passkeys still work.

Passkeys sync across your devices Passkeys sync automatically via iCloud Keychain (Apple devices) or Google Password Manager (Android/Chrome), so a passkey registered on one device may be available on your other devices. If your browser does not support passkeys, the section is hidden. Passkeys are not available in the Grūps App mobile app.

Biometric Login

On supported mobile devices, you can log in using Face ID, Touch ID, or your device's fingerprint sensor instead of typing your password each time.

Toggle Biometric Authentication in Settings → Security. If your device supports it, the toggle is active. If your device doesn't support biometrics, a "not available" note is shown instead.

This setting is only available in the Grūps App mobile app — it doesn't appear on the web version.

Phone Verification

A verified phone number is required for SMS-based 2FA and SMS notifications. To verify your phone number:

  1. Go to Settings → Security.
  2. Tap Add Phone Number (if no number is set) or Change Phone Number.
  3. Enter your phone number and request a verification code.
  4. Enter the code you receive by SMS.

Once verified, a Verified badge appears next to your number. Your phone number is stored encrypted for security.

Sessions & Login History

The Sessions section in Settings → Security shows all devices and browsers currently signed into your account. Each session entry displays:

To sign out a session you don't recognize, tap Sign out next to it. To sign out of all other sessions at once, tap Sign out all other sessions.

If you see an unfamiliar session Sign out the unrecognized session immediately, then change your password and enable 2FA if you haven't already.

Recent Account Activity

The Recent Account Activity list in Settings → Security shows the last 50 security events on your account, newest first. Use it to verify that only you have been accessing your account.

Each event shows:

EventWhat it means
Signed inA successful login to your account
Failed sign-in attemptSomeone tried to log in with your email but used the wrong password
Signed outYour account was signed out from a device or browser
Password reset requestedA password reset email was sent from the login screen
Password changedYour password was successfully changed
Email address changedThe email address on your account was updated
Session revokedAn active session was signed out from the Sessions list

The list shows 5 events by default. Tap View all N events to expand the full list, or Show less to collapse it.

IP addresses are removed after 90 days Location data is derived from your IP address and is automatically purged from the activity log after 90 days. Events older than 90 days show no location information.
See something you don't recognize? A failed sign-in attempt or a login from an unfamiliar location could indicate someone is trying to access your account. Change your password immediately and enable 2FA if you haven't already. Then go to Sessions and sign out any unrecognized active sessions.

Location Settings

Go to Settings → Location to control how Grūps App uses your device's location for the Maps feature.

SettingWhat it does
Background LocationAllows Grūps App to track your location even when the app is not open. Required for geofence alerts to work in the background.
Location Update FrequencyHow often your location is sent to the app: 1, 5, 10, 15, or 30 minutes. More frequent updates use more battery.
Location AccuracyHigh (GPS-level), Balanced, or Low (approximate). Higher accuracy uses more battery.

The Location Status panel shows whether location permission has been granted, whether background permission is active, and the last time your location was updated.

Location sharing is always opt-in You only appear on group maps if you've granted location permission. Revoking permission (in your device settings) removes you from all group maps immediately.

Personal Data & Deletion

Go to Settings → Personal Data to export your data or request account deletion.

Data export

Tap Request Data Export to download a copy of all your Grūps App data as a JSON file. The file is downloaded to your device immediately. The export includes:

Account deletion

Requesting deletion schedules your account for permanent removal after a 30-day grace period. During those 30 days, you can cancel the request.

Before submitting, read carefully what will happen:

What gets deletedWhat is preserved
Your profile information (name, email, avatar)Your messages and posts — anonymized as "Deleted User"
Account preferences and settingsGroup memberships (transferred to remaining members)
Device tokens and notification settingsAdministrative and deletion audit logs (retained for legal compliance, with no personal identifiers after deletion)
All personal identifiable information

To submit a deletion request, check both acknowledgement boxes and tap Request Account Deletion. A verification email is sent to confirm the request is genuine.

If you change your mind, tap Cancel Request while the status is still "Pending Verification" or "Verified." Once deletion begins processing, it cannot be cancelled.

This cannot be undone After deletion completes, your account, profile, and personal data are permanently removed. This action satisfies your right to erasure under GDPR Article 17 and applicable privacy laws.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I change my email address?

Go to Settings → Security. Your primary email is displayed — tap Change Email to update it. You'll need to verify the new address before the change takes effect.

What happens if I lose my phone with 2FA enabled?

Use a backup code to log in. If you don't have backup codes, contact Grūps App support for account recovery assistance. This is why generating and storing backup codes when you enable 2FA is important.

Does changing my language affect other members?

No. Language is a personal setting — it only affects how the app appears to you. Other members in your groups are not affected.

Can I download my data before deleting my account?

Yes. Use Request Data Export in Settings → Personal Data before submitting the deletion request. The download is immediate.
