Notification Preferences

Control how, when, and where Grūps App notifies you — across push, email, and SMS.

Notification Channels

Grūps App sends notifications through three channels. Each channel is configured independently:

ChannelHow it reaches youWhere to configure
PushDevice lock screen, banners, and sounds — in the mobile app and supported browsersSettings → Notifications (this page) and your device settings
EmailSent to your registered email addressSettings → Notifications (global toggle) + each group's My Group Settings
SMSText message to your verified phone numberEach group's My Group Settings (requires a verified phone number)

Push Notifications

Push notifications appear on your device even when Grūps App is not open. They cover all activity across your groups — new messages, event reminders, announcements, and more.

Enabling push in the mobile app

When you first open the Grūps App mobile app, you are asked to allow notifications. If you declined, you can re-enable them in your device settings:

Enabling push in a browser

When you first use Grūps App on the web, your browser asks for permission to show notifications. If you dismissed or blocked that prompt, you can re-enable it in your browser's site settings (usually the lock icon or info icon in the address bar).

Notification sounds

Custom notification sounds may be available depending on your plan. Where they're not, Grūps App uses the default system notification sound.

Email Notifications

Go to Settings → Notifications to find the global email toggle.

The Email Notifications toggle controls whether Grūps App is allowed to send you email at all. When this is off, no group or feature in Grūps App will send you email — regardless of any per-group setting.

Global off ≠ unsubscribed from everything Grūps App may still send you transactional emails you explicitly requested — such as password reset links or account deletion confirmation — even if the global toggle is off. These are required for account security.

When the global toggle is on, each group can further configure which email notifications you receive. See Per-Group Settings below.

Email bounce alerts

If Grūps App detects that your email address is bouncing (emails are being rejected), a warning banner appears at the top of your notification inbox. Tap it to update your email address in Account Settings before you miss important group messages.

SMS Notifications

SMS notifications are sent to your verified phone number. They are opt-in per group — you won't receive any SMS until you enable it in a specific group's settings.

SMS notifications require:

Which SMS notification types are available (event reminders, urgent announcements) may vary by plan.

If your account does not have a verified phone number, the SMS section in My Group Settings shows a prompt to add and verify one. Tap it to go to Settings → Security → Phone Verification.

Per-Group Notification Settings

Each group can have its own notification settings, independent of other groups. These override your global preferences for that group only.

To access per-group settings, open a group and go to the group menu → My Group Settings.

Muting a group

Use the Mute push notifications option in My Group Settings to temporarily silence a group without changing your notification level. Muting affects push only — email notifications from the group continue while muted.

Per-Chat Notification Levels

Within a group's chat, you can set a notification level for each individual channel. This is useful if a group has many channels but you only want alerts from the most important ones.

To change a channel's level, open the channel, tap the info icon (top right), and go to Notifications:

LevelWhen you are notified
All messagesEvery new message in this channel
@Mentions onlyOnly when someone @mentions you, uses @here, or uses @channel
OffNo push notifications from this channel (you can still read it normally)

Per-channel levels may vary by plan. Where they're not available, the chat notification level applies to all channels in the group equally.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why am I not receiving push notifications?

Check three things in order: (1) your device has notifications allowed for Grūps App in system settings; (2) the group's push toggle is on in My Group Settings; (3) the chat channel's notification level is not set to Off. Any one of these being off will silence push for that source.

Can I turn off notifications for one group without affecting others?

Yes. Use the push toggle or mute option in that group's My Group Settings. Other groups are not affected.

How do I stop receiving emails from a group?

Open that group's My Group Settings and turn off the email toggle. Alternatively, turning off the global Email Notifications toggle in Settings → Notifications stops all group emails at once.

Why don't I see the SMS option in My Group Settings?

SMS notifications require a verified phone number on your account. If no number is verified, the SMS option shows a prompt to add one. See Phone Verification.
