Maps & Location

See where your group members are in real time, track location history, and set up location-based alerts.

Overview

Maps gives your group a shared live map showing where members are, with three main features:

The Map

Open Maps from your group's navigation (or from the main app navigation if you use multiple groups). The map fills the screen. Use standard pinch-to-zoom (mobile) or scroll wheel (desktop) to navigate.

Two buttons appear on the right side of the map:

Member Locations

Group members who are sharing their location appear as colored circular markers on the map, showing their initials (or avatar photo). Location markers update in real time as members move.

Tap any member marker to see:

Location sharing is opt-in Members only appear on the map if they have enabled location sharing on their device. Members who are not sharing their location are not visible. See Privacy for details.

Trips

Tap the Trips button on the map to open the Trips panel. Grūps App automatically segments each member's location history into individual journeys — a trip is a period of movement separated by a stop of sufficient duration (configurable in Location Settings).

Member picker

At the top of the Trips panel, each member who is sharing their location appears as an avatar button. Tap a member's avatar to view their trips. The selected member's avatar is highlighted with their map color. Only one member's trips are shown at a time.

Trip cards

Each trip in the list is shown as a card with:

Selecting a trip

Tap a trip card to highlight that trip's route on the map. The map automatically zooms and pans to fit the full trip within view. The selected card is visually highlighted with a colored left border. Tap it again, or tap a different card, to change the selection.

Stops

If the member paused during a trip (stopped somewhere for a period before continuing), stop rows appear beneath the trip card. Each stop shows the address where they paused, the arrival and departure times, and how long they stayed.

Trip history retention

How far back trips are shown depends on your group's plan. A retention label in the panel shows the current window:

PlanTrip history retention
FreeLast 24 hours
BasicLast 3 days
Pro / Team / PremiumLast 7 days
Trips build as members move If a member has just started sharing their location, no trips will appear yet — the panel shows "No trips yet — trips appear as members move." Trips are built from accumulated GPS points and are only recorded when members have background location permission enabled.

Places (Geofences)

A Place is a named circular zone on the map. When a group member enters or exits a Place, you can receive a notification. Places are shared across the group — any member can create, edit, and manage them.

Common uses:

Tap Places on the map to open the Places manager. Existing Places are listed here and shown as colored circles on the map.

Each Place in the list shows:

Actions per Place:

ButtonWhat it does
BellOpens alert subscription settings for that Place
PencilOpens the Place editor to change name, radius, color, or alerts
Play / PauseActivates or deactivates the Place (inactive Places don't trigger alerts)
TrashDeletes the Place permanently

Creating a Place

Tap Create New Place in the Places panel. The process is guided:

On desktop

  1. Set the location — use either method:
    • Search — type an address, street name, or place name (e.g. "Lincoln School" or "Main Street") in the Search Address field. A dropdown shows up to 5 matching results with the place name and address. Click a result to fly the map to that location and set it as the center point.
    • Click on the map — click directly on the map to drop a marker. Drag the marker to fine-tune the position.
  2. Enter a name — e.g., "Training Ground" or "School". If Grūps App can identify a nearby address, it suggests one below the name field.
  3. Configure the Place:
    • Category — choose a category (Home, Work, School, etc.) which sets the icon and default color
    • Description — optional short note
    • Radius — drag the slider (50m – 1,000m) or drag the circle edge on the map to resize the zone
    • Notifications — check "Notify when entering" and/or "Notify when exiting"
    • Color — choose a color for the circle on the map
  4. Tap Save Place.
Searching for a place of interest The address search finds addresses, streets, and named places of interest — restaurants, schools, parks, sports facilities, and more. Each result shows the place name and its address so you can identify the right one at a glance.

On mobile

The same process is split into a 5-step wizard. In Step 1: Set Location, you can either tap the map to drop a pin or type in the Search Address field to find a location by name or address. Select a result from the dropdown to fly the map to that spot and set it as the center. Then proceed through the remaining steps: name → description → radius → color & notifications. Tap Create Place on the final step.

Place Alerts

Place alerts notify you when specific group members enter or leave a Place. Alerts are personal — you choose which members to track, and your settings don't affect what other members see.

To set up alerts for a Place: tap the bell icon on the Place in the list. The alert subscription panel opens.

For each group member:

You cannot subscribe to alerts about yourself — your own row shows a "You" label with no controls.

Preview what the alert looks like A notification preview card at the top of the subscription panel shows exactly what the push notification will look like when a member arrives.

Location Settings

Each member can configure their personal location preferences from the Location Settings page. Access it from the map menu or from your account settings.

Distance Units

Choose whether distances in the Trips panel are shown in Miles (mi) or Kilometers (km). This is a personal preference — it only affects what you see, not what other members see. The setting is saved to your account and synced across devices.

Trip Detection — minimum stop time

This setting controls how long you must stay in one place before Grūps App considers it a stop and starts a new trip when you move again. Four options are available:

SettingWhen to use
5 minVery sensitive — short pauses (e.g. a red light or quick stop) will split trips
10 minModerate — good for urban commuting with frequent brief stops
15 min (default)Balanced — most day-to-day use cases
30 minRelaxed — only long pauses create trip boundaries; shorter stops are treated as part of the same journey

Tap the pill for the desired threshold to select it. Changes take effect for newly recorded trips — existing trip history is not reprocessed.

Location Policy

Every group has a location policy that determines what location features are available to its members. The policy is set when the group is created and cannot be changed afterward.

PolicyWhat members can do
No Location Location features are fully disabled. The Maps section is hidden, check-ins are unavailable, and no location data is ever collected.
Check-in Only Members can check in to events manually. No live tracking, no map view, no geofences. Location data is deleted 24 hours after each event closes.
Live Tracking Full location features: live map, real-time member locations, trips, geofences, and place alerts. Each member controls whether they share their location.

To see your group's current policy, go to Group Settings → Location. A policy badge at the top of the page shows the active policy and a note that it was set at group creation.

Club, Team, and Org groups are limited to No Location or Check-in Only Live Tracking is not available for these group types. If you need live location sharing, use a Family or Standard group instead.

Privacy

Location sharing in Grūps App is completely opt-in:

Location permission is a device setting To start or stop sharing your location, go to your device's app settings and change the location permission for the Grūps App. On iOS: Settings → Grūps App → Location. On Android: Settings → Apps → Grūps App → Permissions → Location.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I see my own location on the map?

Your location is shared with the group (if you've granted permission) but you don't see your own marker on the group map. Use your device's built-in maps app to see your own current location.

How often does the map update?

Location markers update in real time as members move, using a live subscription. There may be a short delay depending on the member's device settings and network connectivity.

Why don't I see any trips for a member?

Trips are built from accumulated GPS points and only recorded when a member has background location permission granted on their device. If a member just started sharing their location, or if location history hasn't accumulated yet, the Trips panel will show "No trips yet — trips appear as members move." Trips also expire after the plan's retention window, which may vary by plan.

What counts as a "stop" inside a trip?

A stop is a pause in movement that lasts at least as long as the member's Trip Detection threshold (configurable in Location Settings, defaulting to 15 minutes). Short pauses — like stopping at a traffic light — are not counted as stops. Stops appear as indented rows beneath the trip card in the Trips panel.

Can I change whether distances show in miles or kilometers?

Yes. Go to Location Settings and select your preferred Distance Unit (Miles or Kilometers). The change applies only to your view of the Trips panel — other members see distances in their own chosen unit.

What is the trip thumbnail?

Each trip card shows a small 52×52 px preview image of the route rendered as a colored polyline on a map. Thumbnails are generated automatically when a trip is saved. If a thumbnail hasn't been generated yet, a simple colored line placeholder appears instead.

Can I search for a place by name instead of clicking the map?

Yes. When creating a Place, use the Search Address field in Step 1 to find any address, street, or named location — including restaurants, schools, parks, sports venues, and other points of interest. Type at least 3 characters and a dropdown shows up to 5 matches, each with the place name and address. Select one to fly the map to that location and set it as the Place center. You can also still click directly on the map if you prefer.

What does deactivating a Place do?

Deactivating a Place stops it from triggering any entry or exit alerts. The Place circle remains visible on the map so you can see the zone, but it's shown as greyed out to indicate it's inactive. Reactivate it at any time to resume alerts.

Can I change the size of a Place after creating it?

Yes. Tap the pencil icon on the Place and adjust the radius slider, or drag the circle edge on the map. Tap Update Place to save.

Do alerts work when the app is in the background?

Yes, when background location permission is granted on your device. On iOS, choose "Always Allow" for the location permission. On Android, grant "Allow all the time" location access. Without background permission, alerts only work while the app is open.
